A Wagon Yard Exclusive – Produced by The Wagon Yard this striking wagon bears a livery for Betteshanger Colliery. Betteshanger located in the Lydden Valley near Deal, was the largest of the four main Kent coalfields. The colliery operated from 1921 to it’s closure in 1989. Coal was originally found in 1912 and following the end of the First World War Dorman Long & Co purchased the mineral rights to the area. Kentish coal burned very hot making it ideal for the steel industry, so Dorman Long merged with S. Pearson & Sons who had a controlling interest in the Channel Steel Company. The newly formed Dorman & Pearson Ltd built a private railway line to transport materials and goods to and from the colliery. ERA: 2 & 3. Our exclusive Betteshanger wagon is produced using an Oxford Rail body and chassis.
