DCL (The Distillers Company Limited) – Bulk Grain N

The Wagon Yard’s 12th limited edition release, our first bulk grain wagon and our first Scottish wagon. Produced in a limited edition of 79 pristine wagons in the livery of DCL (The Distillers Company Limited). The Distillers Company Limited of Edinburgh was formed in 1877 by six Scotch Whiskey distilleries – Macfarlane & Co, John Haig & Co, John Bald & Co, McNab Bros & Co, Stewart & Co and Robert Mowbray. The inspiration for this united company was the Scotch Distillers Association which was formed in 1865 with the aim of ensuring production could meet the growing demand for whiskey. Hugely successful the company was floated on the Edinburgh and Glasgow stock exchange in 1894. John Walker & Son and Buchanan-Dewar would join the six original companies in 1925 and its success continued. DCL would eventually be acquired by Guinness in 1986 spelling the end of this illustrious company. Interestingly the company played significant roles in both the first and second World Wars. Supplying industrial alcohol for the production of explosives during World War 1 and manufacturing penicillin under the name Distillers Biochemicals during the second World War. This particular wagon modelled here can be seen in a photograph taken at Millerhill Yard, South Queensbury near Edinburgh in the winter of 1962 / 1963. Running no’s 48 and 26 are shown, two of the five DCL bulk grain wagons operating from 1948. ERA: 4 and 5
