The Wagon Yard Exclusives – limited edition 20T mineral wagon which bears two liveries WAC – Welsh Associated Collieries and GLM – Gueret Llewellyn and Merret. Each wagon is made to order so please allow 21 days for delivery.

Welsh Associated Collieries Limited based in Cardiff was formed in 1930, some 34 collieries amalgamated to come under the WAC banner these included Duffryn Rhondda, D. Davies & Sons, Guest, Keen & Nettlefolds and the Britannic Merthyr Coal Co.

This amalgamation was in response to the government’s Coal Mines Reorganisation Commission whose directive was to oversee the industry and maximise production and efficiency. This wagon was made in 1933 by Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Works and it bears the WAC livery on one side and on the other is the livery of GLM (Gueret, Lllewellyn and Merret) another of the 34 amalgamated collieries. GLM was a coal exporter and shipbroker based at Bute Docks, Cardiff. The continued use of the companies original name demonstrates that WAC saw the merits of retaining the individual collieries trading names, using GLM’s established name and reputation to it’s advantage. In 1936 WAC merged with Powell Duffryn ending the WAC name and as part of this merger Powell Duffryn also became the parent company of Cambrian Wagon Works Ltd.

To recreate the livery as accurately as possible from the historical photographs the font reading “Empty to Mountain Ash G.W.R” and Repairs advise Gueret, Llewellyn & Merrett Ltd. Bute Docks Cardiff” was created in house by The Wagon Yard, a time consuming and tricky undertaking but well worth the effort to ensure an accurate and authentic reproduction of this unique livery.
